Marathon Insanity Update

Some of my fellow bloggers have been asking about an update on my recent venture into running a ½ marathon in October. I’ll admit for someone that hates (or should I say hated) running I am pleasantly surprised at my progress. My best friend sent me over a training schedule that will prepare us in 12 weeks for a ½ marathon we have signed up for in October called the Urban Cow!

Urban Cow Half Marathon

Priceless name, yes? What can I tell you we live in a very rural city if you catch my drift.

The schedule is brutal looking, especially to one who hasn’t run since required to do so in high school for gym class. Admittedly it initially scared me and I thought to myself, “I am never going to be able to do this!” Our official start date for training is Monday, July 9th but I knew that I would need to prep myself and my body for what was to come.

Since I had no experience running I had to figure out how to breathe properly, how to position myself as I ran and how to pace myself to handle a long distance. Running across the parking lot at the grocery store is not considered running. My best friend has been running for a long time so she was used to all of these factors. I was so new and let’s not forget, hated running!

I started running this past Tuesday. I went to the college track down the street from us, put my earphones in and ran. I read somewhere that if you start by walking a minute, jogging a minute it would prepare your breathing better so I followed this advice for the first mile, I jogged the entire second mile and then was on and off for the third. Wednesday I enlisted the help of a friend and my new Nike + Running app for my Iphone and we jogged 3 ¼ miles. I stopped twice to walk a little bit. Yesterday I jogged the entire 3 ½ miles and couldn’t have been prouder.

I am excited about my new venture and I know that as I continue I will only get stronger and hopefully a little faster as I train my muscles and my breathing. Who knows? Maybe I will even love it because I can say as a former hater of all things running, I’m starting to enjoy myself. There is just something about running and being alone with your thoughts and if you have nothing to say, your music. It’s kind of peaceful.

4th of July ~ Washington DC

So the family and I are on vacation next week for the 4th of July holiday without cell phone service and internet! How awesome is this! My blog will be on hold next week as I get to share new experiences with my daughter. Hopefully I won’t be panicking too much that we will be completely surrounded by water and I have a toddler who loves to swim! Have a great Independence Day America!
