Child Development

It’s All Showers For Reagan

So in another bold move for independence Reagan has decided that she is no longer into baths. She wants to take showers because showers are for big girls and baths are for babies according to the new two year old. I must say all these changes the week that my child turns two is really starting to freak me out! I mean what is going on here? It’s all showers for Reagan from here on out.

In some small way I’m a bit excited that she is no longer into baths because she really treated it more like a swimming pool than a time to get clean. What can I say? The child loves to be underwater. Still…I’m a bit more nervous of the fact that she likes to take really long showers. Isn’t that the fight I’m supposed to have with her when she becomes a teenager and decides that bathroom time is sacrosanct?

She especially loves taking showers in the morning with mom after she has come home from running early in the morning. I must say it’s a bit odd having a two year old stare at every inch of my body as she starts to explore her own. The first time I heard her say nipple as I was holding her made me almost faint. This is all moving too quickly..and who the hell taught her the word nipple? Oh God, help me now!

The funniest things are happening in the bathrooms these days. Obviously with potty training we are spending more time in the bathroom than a college student with a permanent hangover. Last night for example…Rey heads to the kitchen and she is gone for a while. She just went potty not five minutes earlier so I was trying to figure out what she was doing in the bathroom. The last time she was that quiet she found her sticker book and decided a head start was necessary on filling in the squares on her potty chart to get the whole book of stickers. A dummy my child is not!

So I walk into the bathroom, startling her. She looks up and says “Mama, Mr. Lizard potty.” I look down and see this colorful bean bag gecko hanging half off the toilet seat. The head area is obscured by the toilet seat lid which she had closed on top of it. She lifts the lid, laughs and repeats “Mr. Lizard potty!” It was the funniest thing I have ever seen and I couldn’t not get a picture of it. Seriously? Who thinks of this? My child, the two year old independent who has her toys go potty and takes showers. What’s next?

Tricks to eat less (without skipping meals)

Tricks to eat less (without skipping meals)

1. Putting ice cubes in your drinks forces the body to heat up, so you burn more calories .

2. Normally we tend to use low glasses and widths. Instead, drink in long and narrow.

3. Keep away snacks. If you do not have to look at, it will be much easier not to remember them and therefore do not eat them.

4. The largest food will satisfy you more, so prepare some salad with your mini sandwich to make you look bigger.

5. A greater variety on the table, the more you will eat, so Focus on two or three food (not worth fries, pizza and chicken).

6. If you could see everything you’ve eaten, it is much more likely to peers. If you take snacks, see keeping the wraps.

7. Integrate the healthiest item on your first meal.

8. If you have a craving for food, chew gum or brush your teeth. It will take away the desire instantly.

9. When eating away from home, try to chew well and as slowly as possible. And remember that junk food such as chips or burgers, melts quickly in the mouth, unlike, for example, lettuce.

Viral Exanthem … What?

The past couple of days Reagan has had these strange looking bumps on the back of her legs and on her arms. At first we chalked it up to hives because she would get them occasionally when she was an infant, but they always went away and didn’t seem to bother her. Then again, nothing ever does. They looked a bit different then the hives we have seen on her before, but again…they weren’t bothering her. No itching, scratching, fever or complaining on her part.

I figured she must have some kind of grass allergy because they came on after we had been at a grass doubles volleyball tournament this past weekend. Monday they started looking worse and by Tuesday the back of her legs were red and splotchy and it concerned me enough to make a doctor appointment. She went to daycare Wednesday and we informed them that she had these curious bumps but didn’t seem to be affecting her. To them it looked like chicken pox but it wasn’t developing in any of her “hot” areas (armpits, diaper area, etc.) so they allowed her to go to school. Our doctor appointment was for later that day anyway.

We took her to our pediatrician and she said it was called Viral Exanthem. What the hell?

Basically it is a rash that comes on due to some viral or bacterial cause which needs to run its course. No medication, just sleep and fluids. She would probably be cranky and not really feel well. Great…just what I want, a cranky toddler! Grumpy toddler alert!

Since it is technically contagious because it is viral she needs to be kept home from school and wait until it starts to abate. I’ll spare you the pictures because to me it looks like little pimples on her legs and arms and seriously, who wants to see that?

Oh yes, and Mom and Dad…you could get it to.

My Social Butterfly

Reagan is a happy kid. She squeals in delight at being around new people and will strike up a conversation with practically anyone. I used to joke that Rey was my milk carton child because she will walk up to people and say hey or want to get involved in some way. That’s horrible to say I know. I fear the very thought of someone snatching my child away from me.

Reagan turns two next month. I can hardly believe it. Only yesterday it seems she was still immobile and dependent on me at every minute. Now she tells me “go away mama” or “Reagan do it.” Her independence has skyrocketed and she understands that she doesn’t need me as much anymore. Wow..that started really early.

But when is it too early to talk to her about the difference between strangers and friends? I don’t want to stunt her social demeanor. I love that she is so outgoing and wants to be friends with everyone. But honestly, it scares me that she is a little too outgoing at times. Let’s face it there are some creepy people out there and our toddlers are so vulnerable and innocent. I’m sure there are parents everywhere that wonder about this and I wanted to get the opinions of my fellow readers. When do you start having the conversation with your child about strangers?

In my opinion it is still too early to help her understand the concept of stranger danger. I think her being social is such a wonderful thing and I hope it is because she is secure in her family relationships and bonds that she has developed. The best thing I can do is to encourage her interactions with others so she continues to develop socially but be next to her like seeds on strawberries to protect her from danger. I don’t want her to be frightened and think that every stranger she encounters is a threat and turn her into an introvert and become shy.

So what is the proper age? Three, four? Should I start now? What do you think?

4 things you should know if you are a novice runner

Going for a run. That’s your new challenge. The desire you arrive late, but finally arrive. It was written, sooner or later you had to fall. Do you think your city tour to beat shoe? This fever, which is not so, because it perpetuates in time, have unwritten rules mandatory.

You already take time running (and think this Decalogue is not for you)? Check out, you never know if you’re doing all that well.

What you need to know:

These are your domains.

Sign the consent there, there and there, too. Yes. You’re part of an elite, of a tribe, congratulations, you are a runner. You will not give a card (unless you point you to a club) but social effects is as if you had. The runners greet when crossed in their careers (yes, even training), are encouraged, are recommended and empathetic look. A runner is a friend, a brother.

Do not jog, you do running.

Maybe someday you escape that prehistoric term ” race ” does not matter, but do not get. The only important thing is that never, ever what apodes “footing”. Get update.

Pick out all the organizational chart.

A runner calls another runner. That is, in many situations “run” will be a topic of unity and talk a resource that will help a lot. But watch out, you have to learn to differentiate the ‘runner’ structure. It’s simple: there are runners of postureo (to these the fast fighters), los ‘pro’ (very useful, ask your questions), which range from ‘pro’ and are not (ignore them) and the ‘detodalavida’. Yes, those who were running when nobody did and, then, were misunderstood social (athletically speaking). Respect.

Do not try venirte up.

Perhaps your references are Usain Bolt (if you do not know who is Google it or accuse you of being a runner of postureo) or even the very Forrest Gump (which Stride!). Okay, maybe someday you achieve your marks, but not the first day that you get the net. Running is progressive. You will evolve (also quite fast) as you go practicing.

Now, yes, the commandments:

You do with a core team with two essential elements: mesh (or shorts) and running shoes (the name ‘running’ is important).

Will heat up before running. Yes, running a little bit to start running, so hard, but necessary.

You’re not going to ‘pro’ without being one. Because you only get not to get tips that can really bring you things (they believe they already know everything) and because your recommendations can make someone suffers an injury.

Will combine perfectly your kit, okay, (not required to give up your style) but if you sign up to any race, is prohibited Brand ‘little something’ day ‘D’. It ‘s not the day. Grave error.

No makeup (go who go running in your group). The skin eliminates toxins, sweat, no need to clog.

Do not get confused on paper film. It’s an urban legend that runs around (yes, it’s also runner). You will sweat more, yes, but not thin. What you’re doing is losing liquid. Extra gramitos that the recover as soon as you drink water.

Will you create a habit? Not worth day in and day out a hundred no. Nor overtraining. Experts say that with 3 days a week (interleaved) will be a runner TOP.

Will you go changing travel? If the body becomes accustomed, habituated, your training will not be effective.

Thou shalt not go from zero to a hundred, or do a race or a marathon (or half) to ‘because I’m worth it’. You have to prepare for it. Not more visit the doctor to do a checkup before you start running.

Will stretch is important, you do sport you do. At the end you always have to stretch. Avoid injuries, overloading … superimportante: stretch!

Do you want to lose weight?

 lose weight

Slimming, toning, reduce pain, disconnect, reduce stress … Although active life, do sport, will make your life a little bit of all these things, choose the exercise you choose, it is true that each routine has as its point strong one (s) feature (s) specific (s). Slim down

Your goal is to burn calories. To do this you have to choose sports with a high caloric expenditure and some strength (to tone and keep your metabolism). What’s your sport? The king of the moment: the running, also spinning.

The aerobic work is assured. It is important that you alternate different rhythms, your body does not get used. In the case of running, set yourself day light running and resistance, and others of sprints and speed. If you opt for spinning, playing with the load, duration of efforts and your different work areas.

4th of July Wrap Up

boat trip

4th of July was a blast for my family this year. We are back in California among some of our closest friends and we got to spend the holiday with them like we used to in years past. Before we all grew up and had families we would go out to Don Pedro Lake every year on a houseboat that our friends owned; The Lynar Liner. We would bake in the sun all day, drink, wakeboard, jet ski, drink some more, go tubing, swim, drink..I’m sure you see a pattern here!

Since we were in Philly the past six years we hadn’t been on the houseboat trip so we were really looking forward to it this year. Let me tell it ever different now! Most all of us have families now that consist of at least one child. The youngest on board the Lynar Liner this year was 3 month old Colton (cutest life jacket I have ever seen.)  Four of the kids were under the age of three including Reagan and then there were a couple middle age children.

When your’e docked in a cove with nothing but water surrounding all four sides you become a little paranoid with that many little ones on board; constantly scanning for your child to make sure they didn’t wander out beyond the child gate keeping them all corralled into a safe area. If you read my post yesterday I”m Raising A Fish you know that is very difficult for me to keep Reagan out of the water as she constantly wants to go swimming! Our lazy houseboat days turned into more than a few meltdowns because they all had the same area to share and play in and with toddlers that can be a bit cumbersome at times. Tomorrow I’ll go into some details in my blog about holding multi-kid events in close quarters. Yikes!

Catching Some Wake

Overall it was such a successful trip. We got to catch up with friends we hadn’t seen, some in eight years! The kids had a blast at the fireworks show. I tell you it was the longest fireworks I had been to in a long time. Lake Don Pedro really knows how to put on a good show. Reagan was so excited the first time on the boat. She threw up her hands and squealed at how fast we were going. She knew that putting her life jacket on meant she was going to get into the water and that always made her happy. She had so much fun playing with the other kids, especially her new best bud Kaylie. I know it will be an annual trip that we will enjoy doing as a family and will be remembered by Reagan forever.

10 most unknown aspects of hyperactive children

The ADHD have a neurological origin

New diagnostic techniques based on brain mapping have identified the main areas of the brain affected by the disorder: the pre-frontal cortex, basal ganglia, anterior cingulate cortex and parietal.

To begin, children are 4 times more likely to have ADHD than girls. In addition, the symptoms are different in each case: while hyperactivity is the predominant symptom in them, the lack of attention is the most common in them. This makes detection in girls as the most problematic symptom that creates the environment is not hyperactivity and inattention.

Children’s food allergies

food allergies

More and more children have allergies of all kinds, also food allergies. The reason for the increase in allergies among children is unknown, although many relate to lifestyle and environmental deterioration. Anyway, we remain alert to alleviate the impact of food allergies in children.

Fruits. Generally this allergy to fruits does not mean all kinds of fruits. The most common is the allergy to Rosaceae fruits such as cherries, strawberries, plums, nectarine, peach or apricot, but the child that suffering can eat other fruits normally. The symptoms of allergies to fruits are common to other food allergies and in this case also usually subsides over time.

Nuts With allergy to nuts occurs as allergy to fruits, which does not have to be all nuts. Intolerance to peanuts is the most common and besides the usual symptoms of allergies, are observed gastrointestinal problems. You have to watch what children eat nuts because it is one of the most persistent allergies over time.

Fish and shellfish allergy fish is also very common among children, especially when you start to include in your diet. In fact it is the third allergy food after the eggs and milk and can send itself in a few years or last for a lifetime. The same is true of shellfish allergy, although in this case, is not considered a staple and circumvents the problem more easily.

Gluten deserves special mention gluten allergy that can greatly complicate the diet of children. Gluten is a seed that is found in most cereals, basic in infant feeding. Luckily, the population is increasingly sensitized with this allergy to gluten and food manufacturers make their products fit for celiac children allergic to gluten.

Constipation in babies

Constipation in babies

Constipation is a disorder characterized by difficulty or inability to evacuate a person has. During the first months of a baby’s life , both coordination between their bowel movements and relaxation of the sphincter of her anus, is not very efficient or has not matured enough.

In these cases, it is normal that the small display annoying cry insistently, lift your legs and turns red to try to push the stool. These are some of the symptoms of constipation in babies.

When you can mean a baby is constipated?

Newborn baby crying

One can say that a baby is constipated when the small becomes fidgety and restless. Legs moving constantly, it turns red the effort, and does nothing to mourn, of course. The gases and colic are inevitable when the baby is in this state. According to experts, during breastfeeding babies often dirty diapers almost every time they eat feces sometimes small stools and more abundant.

Evacuation frequency decreases as babies grow. From 2 months old usually evacuate them only once or twice a day. Everything depends on the type of food you receive as well as its own nature, if the child has allergies, etc.

The constipation in baby requires rapid intervention by parents and pediatrician, to prevent the problem from becoming a chronic nuisance, or that complicated. The longer they are stool in the colon baby, but will become dry and hard, and their elimination will be even more difficult and painful.

When the baby’s bowel scarce, first rule out the possibility that he is feeding well; if the baby does not eat, it is not to be constipated but has nothing to evacuate. In the first days of life, the baby must be evacuated at least three times a day, if it does it must be because you are getting low on power.

If the baby stops evacuate one or two days, and when I return to do their stools are hard and dry, you may be left to evacuate by constipation. In this case, to tell your pediatrician.

To relieve constipation in babies, parents can add a little extra water in infant formula. The water will soften a little stool and prevent them from being retained in the small colon. Some pediatricians, in fact, recommend lowering bottles a little, putting 35 ml instead of 30 ml of water for each level scoop of milk. If constipation in the baby becomes persistent, it is advisable to ask for medical advice.

Exist in the market milks ‘anti-constipation’, suitable to alleviate the problem. Another option are the bathrooms with warm water. A benefit for intestinal transit baby. Massages are also very stimulating to help evacuate the baby.

You can bend the legs on the abdomen small, circular motion; position the hand on the baby’s tummy (up to the navel ) and give a deeper and horizontally, palm and base of fingers massage. A backrub baby with movements up and down, can also help the baby to evacuate.

Apart from the special milk, warm bath, the massage, and water, one of the remedies used by many parents is the glycerin suppository applied to the baby’s anus. Some parents choose to introduce the tip of the thermometer, although this method does not offer or a security type and present risk of injury to the baby. There are also those who choose to give an orange juice lowered in water very small.

In one or another case, it is recommended that the opinion of the pediatrician is heard. Anyway, it is good to know that constipation can stop bothering babies from the fourth month of life , when, for medical determination, start feeding with compotes, purees, creams and fruits and vegetables, rich in fibers.
